There was once a young girl who dreamed … During the daytime – she spent her time stitching, learning to make the beautiful beaded necklaces, vests and shoes, that her people made and traded across the land. And then at night, she was so tired that she fell into a deep and dreamless sleep. As she grew up, her skill for beading became admired by all. And then, one night she dreamed. And in her dream, she saw a star-lit path leading away from her people.
Long ago, when the world was young, there was no Sun in the Sky and the world was always grey and cold. The animals got together to discuss what they could do to bring warmth and light to their world. They talked and they talked and they talked – but no-one came up with an idea until ….
The seasons are easily observed over a school year, and the different plants and insects that are active at particular times are easy to spot. The seasons are caused by changing amounts of sunlight that reach the ground, determined by the height of the Sun in the sky and the length of the shadows, which in turn is determined by the tilt of the Earth’s axis.
The Solar System is made up of the Sun, four terrestrial planets, and four large gas giant planets, plus large numbers of minor planets, dwarf planets, asteroids, and an awful lot of space in between them all. This activity will give students an understanding of the scale of the Solar System in a school hall.
There was once a land, ruled by a King, who had, but the one child, a daughter, who he brought up to rule after him. Now, this young woman was as wise as she was beautiful, and she was as beautiful as the Dawn. The Sun and Moon light up our skies. The Sun’s golden rays fill the sky from dawn to dusk and then as the Sun begins to set, the Moon rises and takes his place, filling the sky with her silver light. Every night as the Sun slides from the sky, he would look across at the Moon and sigh. For you see, the poor Sun was lonely, up there in the sky. The Moon has stars to talk to, but who does the Sun have? No-one.
Long ago, when the world began, before the Humans came… There was nothing but Winter, and Winter had spread far across the land. The trees were bowed down with snow, the leaves were brown and the few berries and fruit that grew, soon withered and died. The rivers and lakes were ice, and those that lived in them suffered and many of them died.
Long ago, it was said that there was two worlds. The real world where real people lived and the imagined world where the fair folk lived. These two worlds lay apart and their paths never crossed, except at certain times of the year. The longest day and the longest night. There was once a young girl who more than anything else in the world wanted to reach for the stars. She did not just want to see them, she wanted to touch them. Of course all of her family thought this was a ridiculous idea…
Long ago in the far, far North of what is now called America, it was not possible for the people to stay in their homes throughout the year. For when the North Wind came, they had to move away to the warmer lands down South. As so as Summer changed to Autumn, the people would be wait for the first signs and sounds of The North Wind blowing through their land.
