Long ago on the island of Hawaii, there lived an old woman, Heena. And Heena was so old, that no-one could rightly remember when she had been born. She herself had given birth to twenty-two children and now she spent her time cooking and cleaning for all her children’s children. And Heena felt old. She didn’t know how old she was, but she knew she was old. And she was tired. She was tired of all the cooking and cleaning, that had filled her days from dawn to dusk, for so many years. All she wanted was a rest.

People fear me far more than they do you!”
Long ago, when the world began, before the humans came, there was one Earth and there was one Sun, but there was no Moon in the sky. And at night – it was very, very, very dark! All the night-time animals found it very difficult to see. They bumped into trees, they fell over rocks, and, worst of all, they could not see to find their food.
Long ago, it was said that there was two worlds. The real world where real people lived and the imagined world where the fair folk lived. These two worlds lay apart and their paths never crossed, except at certain times of the year. The longest day and the longest night. There was once a young girl who more than anything else in the world wanted to reach for the stars. She did not just want to see them, she wanted to touch them. Of course all of her family thought this was a ridiculous idea…
Long ago, according to Korean legend, there were many, many worlds spinning across the sky. One those worlds was OUR world, the Planet Earth! The planet Earth was special because above our planet, the Sun shone, all through the day and the Moon was bright all through the night. And our planet was surrounded with shining, sparkling light day and night. And so our world, the planet Earth was called the World of Light.
Long ago, on an island in the Caribbean sea… There lived a King, in a magnificent palace that was built by the sea, so that he could sit at night on his throne and look out to sea. And the King sat and looked every night, and he noticed something very strange. The Moon in the sky, seemed to change shape. Every night, it looked different! How could this be?
Long ago, when the world began, according to Caribbean legend, the very first people did not live on the planet Earth – No, no, no, no! No, no, no, no! No, no, no, no! They lived far away on the Moon- Yes, yes, yes, yes! Yes, yes, yes, yes! Yes, yes, yes, yes! And they kept the Moon sparkling, shining, shimmering, silvery clean!
Long ago, when the world began, there was no Day and there was no Night, because, the Sun and the Moon had not yet been created. There was no light and there was no dark, everything was grey! Grey, grey, grey, grey, grey! And it was very difficult to see anything at all!
Long ago, in China… There was a King, the King of all China, the wealthiest of Kings, in all the lands. Now, this King, he had everything that money could buy. Except … For the one thing he really wanted, which was a child. A son or a daughter to be Queen or King after him. Now China was full of children, there were many children to choose from, to be the next Queen or King. How could he decide which was the right child to choose?
Long ago in the part of the island that is now called Papua New Guinea…
At the edge of the island there was a village. And in that village there was a house. And in that house there lived two brothers, twins, identical twins. They looked alike, they talked alike and whatever they did, they did alike. And whatever they did, they always did together! They were fishermen, so they slept throughout the day. But, when the Sun began to set and the Moon began to rise…
